Plan your California CCW renewal

Cobra Tactical’s 8-hour renewal course serves existing permit holders in the Santa Clarita and Valencia area and throughout Los Angeles County. Check the published session for its classroom and range locations, required dates and availability. If no date is listed, use the course interest form to request notification.

How many hours are required in 2026?

California Penal Code section 26165(d) requires at least eight hours of renewal training acceptable to the issuing authority. Required elements include safety and legal instruction, mental health education, a written examination and live-fire qualification. Read California’s CCW training requirements.

Renewing through LAPD?

LAPD advises starting your renewal 90 days before your permit expires. Its current instructions require an LAPD CCW Live Scan for renewals and an 8-hour training certificate uploaded to Permitium. LAPD says to complete training before expiration, but no more than six months before it. A renewal application submitted more than 90 days after expiration requires restarting as an initial applicant. Renewal applicants do not need an interview. Read LAPD’s current CCW renewal instructions before applying or booking training.

Renewing through another agency?

Confirm your issuing agency’s current provider acceptance, training authorization, renewal deadlines and certificate requirements before enrolling. Completing training does not guarantee renewal of a permit. For Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department applicants, follow the LASD CCW instructions.

First permit or renewal?

This course is for renewal applicants. First-time applicants should review the California initial CCW course. You can also meet our instructors or visit the Cobra Tactical CCW training overview.

What to expect

2026 LASD CCW Renewal Fingerprint Update

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) renewal applicants: LASD currently states that, pursuant to California Penal Code section 26185, all CCW renewals submitted to the California Department of Justice on or after September 1, 2026 must provide new fingerprints. Follow the instructions issued by LASD and Permitium for when and how the required fingerprinting must be completed.

This fingerprint requirement is separate from the required 8-hour CCW renewal training course. LASD currently requires renewal applicants to complete at least 8 hours of approved firearms training and to qualify with each firearm to be listed on the license.

High Instructor-to-Student Ratio

One instructor for every two students, providing substantially more individual coaching, supervision, and feedback than a large-format class.

Experienced Instructors

Training is conducted by experienced instructors with backgrounds that include military service, law enforcement, civilian firearms instruction, and advanced firearms training.

Practical Firearms Training

Students receive practical firearms instruction designed to develop safe handling, proper technique, accuracy, and confidence - not simply classroom instruction.

Small Class Sizes

Classes are generally capped at eight students, allowing instructors to spend more time working directly with each participant.

Important: Cobra Tactical provides firearms training, not legal advice. CCW application, fingerprinting, documentation, fees, timing, and renewal requirements are controlled by the issuing agency and applicable law. Verify current requirements directly with LASD, LAPD, or your issuing agency before submitting your renewal.
